about

'Walking Spirits' is the follow up to 2020's 'A Gathering'. Both albums were recorded during the same sessions at Roundhead studio in Auckland in June 2019.

'Walking Spirits' moves in several directions at once, harking back to the hard-bop and prog-jazz roots of the band, whilst also venturing into freer interpretations of time and tempo.

The eponymous Walking Spirits, penned by pianist Daniel Millward, is an energetic romp through alternating 12/8 and 9/8 feels. The horns and guitar float and dance over bass and piano ostinatos, whilst drummer Shaun Anderson lays down shifting patterns of groove.

Epoch I - Dawn, written by Callum Allardice is an uncommonly sweet melody for the guitarist, though touched with melancholy. The band ebbs and flows between passages of rubato and time playing, moving as one.

Epoch III - Demise brings out his darker writing. It is a ballad of aching sadness, though a steely thread of endurance runs throughout.

Hymn for 51 is a fierce lament for the victims of the Christchurch mosque terrorist attack of March 15th, 2019. Written by trumpeter Lex French, the theme rings out over a chaotic flurry of drums. Three soloists takes turns to express their grief and solidarity towards the victims and their communities.

The last track, Hero's Theme by altoist Jake Baxendale, opens with pure rock! The big beat belies the ever-shifting meter. It's an unabashed homage to Argentinian composer Guillermo Klein and his group 'Los Guachos'.
